Mission and objectivesAs the United Nations lead agency on international development, UNDP works in 170 countries and territories to eradicate poverty and reduce inequality. We help countries to develop policies, leadership skills, partnering abilities, institutional capabilities, and to build resilience to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals. Our work is concentrated in three focus areas; sustainable development, democratic governance and peace building, and climate and disaster resilience. UNDPโs mandate is to end poverty, build democratic governance, rule of law, and inclusive institutions. We advocate for change, and connect countries to knowledge, experience and resources to help people build a better life.
ContextThe Africa Sustainable Finance Hub (ASFH) undertakes work at both regional and country levels that is aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the African Union Agenda 2063. The ASFH team collaborates closely with the broader UNDP family, the Global Policy Network, Regional Hubs in Africa, and other UNDP units to create synergies that support effective SDG implementation and maximize development impact. ASFH is currently implementing the project โSupporting Informal Enterprisesโ Transition Towards Sustainable Growth and Formalization in the Africa, Caribbean and Pacific Regions,โ an initiative of the Organization of African, Caribbean and Pacific States (OACPS), financed by the European Union and UNDP, and implemented by UNDP. The project delivers integrated interventions at the macro, meso, and micro levels of the informal sector ecosystem to foster enterprise growth and support pathways to formalization. The project aims to achieve its outcomes through the following approaches: 1. Developing an integrated policy framework for the formalization of informal enterprises and establishing relevant incentive schemes. 2. Improving access to finance through the development of new digital financial services and enhanced capitalization opportunities for financial intermediaries. 3. Strengthening the capacities of informal sector intermediaries and aggregators to promote market participation. 4. Establishing targeted sectoral collective action platforms to address systemic gaps to sustainable growth and formalization; and 5. Enhancing regional exchange of knowledge and resources across OACPS countries. Within this context, the Communication UN Volunteer will lead efforts to raise awareness and enhance the visibility of the projectโs formalization agenda through the development of high-quality communication products.
