Climate Finance Investment Intern

The GGGI PNG program is seeking a talented and motivated individual to support the identification and development of climate investment opportunities under the Climate FIRST Project. The intern will assist with the development of sustainable finance initiatives under the Climate FIRST Project. The intern will assist with technical research, project pipeline development, stakeholder mapping, and data analysis to support investment planning and project preparation.

The Climate Finance Investment Intern will work under the guidance of the Project Manager and will work closely with Climate Investment Advisors and other team members to support the identification of investment opportunities, contribute to the development of project proposals, and assist in analyzing data to shape bankable projects related to sustainable finance at national level.

The GGGI Papua New Guinea (PNG) Country Program, hosted at the Climate Change and Development Authority (CCDA), is scaling up its activities to provide advisory and implementation support to PNG in climate resilience and green growth initiatives. This is done in close cooperation with CCDA and other relevant national and international stakeholders. GGGI is inviting applications for internship positions within the PNG Country Program under the Climate Finance Initiative for Resilience and a Sustainable Transition (FIRST) Project funded by the Australiaโ€™s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT).

CURRENT OPPORTUNITY

The GGGI PNG program is seeking a talented and motivated individual to support the identification and development of climate investment opportunities under the Climate FIRST Project. The intern will assist with the development of sustainable finance initiatives under the Climate FIRST Project. The intern will assist with technical research, project pipeline development, stakeholder mapping, and data analysis to support investment planning and project preparation.

The Climate Finance Investment Intern will work under the guidance of the Project Manager and will work closely with Climate Investment Advisors and other team members to support the identification of investment opportunities, contribute to the development of project proposals, and assist in analyzing data to shape bankable projects related to sustainable finance at national level.

The assignment will include the following but not limited to:

Assisting the Climate Investment Advisor โ€“ Sustainable Finance in the the development of the Climate Investment initiatives by assisting in the identification and development of sustainable finance investment bankable projects. Conduct preliminary data analysis and research: Assist in gathering, reviewing, and analyzing financial and technical data to inform investment proposals and project design. This may include market analysis, feasibility reviews, and identifying funding opportunities. Assist in proposal preparation and pipeline development: Support the drafting of concept notes and technical inputs for investment proposals, including review of feasibility assessments, institutional arrangements, and potential financing models. Support stakeholder mapping and coordination: Contribute to mapping key stakeholders across the energy sector and help coordinate engagement efforts with relevant government agencies, private sector entities, and development partners. Maintain accurate and organized investment-related records: Ensure that all files related to investment proposals and financial assessments are up-to-date, audit-ready, and well-organized, supporting transparency, accountability, and ease of access for project teams.

The intern will work under the supervision of the Climate FIRST project manager. The internship offers an excellent opportunity to gain hands-on experience in a dynamic, international environment, working on critical issues related to sustainable development. The intern will have the chance to develop technical skills, understand the functioning of an international organization, and gain insights into the operational aspects of GGGI.

ELIGIBILITY

Applicants to the GGGI internship program must at the time of application meet the following requirements:

Be enrolled in a Bachelorโ€™s (final year), Masterโ€™s or PhD program prior to internship assignment, or a recent graduate within the last 12 months. Be engaged or recently engaged in academic study in a field directly related to the Instituteโ€™s work. Proficiency in English is essential. Applicants must be available to commit to the full duration of the internship as agreed upon with the supervising staff. Candidates must be either Papua New Guinea (PNG) nationals or foreign nationals with a valid work permit to work in PNG.

QUALIFICATION

Currently enrolled in or recently graduated from a Bachelorโ€™s or Masterโ€™s program in finance, accounting, economics, or a related field from a recognized university or institution. Strong command of MS Word and Excel, with demonstrated expertise in developing data collection templates, is highly desirable for this position. Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English are essential. Familiarity with climate change and sustainable development issues, especially climate finance mechanisms (e.g. climate funds, carbon pricing, green bonds) is highly desirable. Coursework or experience in climate change policy or environmental economics is a plus, but not mandatory. Proven analytical and report writing skills are advantageous.

SELECTION PROCESS

GGGI evaluates applications based on eligibility requirements, relevance of academic study and work experience (if any); and the level of interest and motivation to contribute to development work. Due to the high volume of applications, only shortlisted candidates will be contacted.

TEMRS AND CONDITIONS

Duration: The internship program is for at least four months and up to six months. Once selected, interns must begin their internship either prior to or within 12 months of graduation. Stipend: GGGI interns receive a monthly stipend of USD $500 per month (unless agreed to be funded by sponsoring institutions). All costs related to travel, insurance, accommodation, and living expenses must be borne by either the interns themselves or sponsoring institutions. Visa: GGGI will provide a supporting letter for visa. Interns will be responsible for obtaining and financing the necessary visas. Travel: Intern will arrange and finance their travel to the internship location. Medical Insurance: Interns must present proof of valid medical insurance to GGGI upon returning the signed internship contract. Confidentiality: Interns must keep confidential any and all unpublished information obtained during the course of the internship and may not publish any documents based on such information. Academic Credit: Interns may get academic credit from their institution of higher education for the internship. Interns need to check with their university to confirm their academic credit policy for internships. Working Hours: interns are expected to work during normal working hours. Leave should be pre-approved by the Intern Manager, and the latter should inform the Office of HR accordingly. Learning Outcomes: before completion of the internship, Intern Managers are expected to review the learning outcomes with the intern. Certificate: provided upon successful completion of the internship, upon request.
