In collaboration with development partners, the Government of Guyana is implementing two major sustainable landscape initiatives in Guyana to strengthen national systems and institutions for delivering low-carbon, climate-resilient development. These projects focus on enhancing access to carbon finance through capacity building, strengthening Monitoring, Reporting, and Verification Systems (MRVS), and supporting the implementation of mitigation actions. The UK PACT Project supports expanding the existing REDD+ MRV system, enabling Guyana to improve carbon accounting and reporting, and build capacity to participate in voluntary carbon markets and related climate finance mechanisms, while the EU project focuses on Payments for Ecosystem Services (PES) and building climate finance capacities. The projects will also support institutional coordination and data management for transparent climate reporting under the Paris Agreement.
POSITION SUMMARY
The Climate Change Officer will provide essential project management and technical support for both projects. The Officer will assist in planning, implementation, monitoring, stakeholder coordination, and reporting functions. He/She will work closely with government institutions, civil society, technical experts, and donor representatives to ensure effective delivery of project outcomes.
The Climate Change Officer will be key in coordinating project activities, tracking progress against work plans and results frameworks, supporting stakeholder engagement, and ensuring timely reporting and compliance with donor requirements. This position offers an exciting opportunity to contribute to national and global climate goals through impactful project delivery and cross-sectoral collaboration.
PURPOSE
The Climate Change Officer will coordinate project implementation, strengthen national MRV systems (including REDD+ and GHG inventories), and build capacity on PES and climate finance. The role involves engaging stakeholders, supporting monitoring and reporting, facilitating training and knowledge-sharing, contributing to data analysis for climate decision-making, and ensuring effective communication among project partners, government agencies, and donors.
ENGAGEMENT
The Climate Change Officer is expected to:
Direct report to the Program Manager
Engage with the Program Manager and other staff at the country, regional, and HQ level to ensure project delivery.
Coordinate meetings, workshops, and capacity-building sessions with stakeholders.
Facilitate stakeholder engagement and inter-agency collaboration to promote inclusive and transparent project delivery.
Support communication with government ministries, local NGOs, development partners, and technical consultants.
Contribute to knowledge sharing and documentation of best practices and lessons learned
DELIVERY
Coordinate project activities under the two projects to ensure timely and efficient implementation.
Assist in developing and implementing project work plans, timelines, and budgets.
Monitor and report progress against results frameworks and deliverables for the projects.
Prepare technical and financial reports in compliance with donor requirements.
Support procurement and contract management processes.
Support expanding and strengthening the national MRV system, including REDD+ and GHG inventories.
Facilitate stakeholder consultations and inter-agency coordination.
Contribute to capacity-building efforts through support for training, workshops, and knowledge-sharing activities.
Assist with data collection, analysis, and quality control supporting climate reporting.
Support the development and application of digital tools for MRV systems.
Assist with the design and implementation of MEL frameworks and indicators.
Track and document progress, challenges/risks, and results for adaptive project management.
Support data visualization and reporting for internal and external audiences.
QUALIFICATIONS
Must be a Guyana citizen or holding a valid working visa.
A Bachelor's degree (Masterโs preferred) in Environmental Science, Climate Change, Natural Resource Management, Project Management, Development Studies, or a related field
At least 6-8 years of relevant work experience in project coordination, climate change, or environmental management.
Demonstrated experience supporting donor-funded projects, especially with MRV systems, REDD+, or GHG inventories, is an advantage.
Experience working with government institutions, NGOs, or international partners in Guyana.
A strong grasp of issues and topics related to green growth, climate change, and sustainable development is highly desirable.
Experience in external relations and liaison management in an international organization related to green growth and global development is a plus.
Knowledge of climate finance and UNFCCC reporting requirements is a plus.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office and project management tools; knowledge of GIS, data platforms, and GHG inventory software is advantageous.
An excellent command of spoken and written English. The ability to communicate in Spanish is a plus.

WORKING CONDITIONS
The Climate Change Officer is an X8 grade level in GGGI's Guyana salary scale. The salary range for the position starts at USD 29,915 per annum, depending on qualifications, experience, academic background, and internal equity. GGGI contributes 15% of the base salary to the retirement plan/long-term savings, 27 days of annual leave, and private health insurance that covers dental and vision.
