Mission and objectivesSince its inception in 1972, the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) has been the global authority that sets the environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment. UNEPโ€™s mission is to provide leadership and encourage partnership in caring for the environment by inspiring, informing, and enabling nations and peoples to improve their quality of life without compromising that of future generations. Headquartered in Nairobi, Kenya, UNEP works through its divisions as well as regional, liaison and out-posted offices and a growing network of collaborating centres of excellence.

The NBSAP Accelerator Partnership provides technical and financial support for the implementation of GBF-aligned NBSAPs, including via strengthened country-driven stakeholder coordination, collaboration and sharing of best practices to identify country needs to implement their NBSAPs, raise national profile of countries' NBSAPs, and fast-track implementation support for NBSAPs through a matchmaking service, increased access to expertise, knowledge and capacity development, and via in-country/facilitation support to countries/regions. The NBSAP Accelerator Partnership is supported by a Global Coordination Unit (GCU), providing a secretariat function which includes facilitating and coordinating key activities, measuring and communicating progress and supporting its Steering Committee to achieve the objectives. Roles in the GCU are divided across SCBD, UNDP and UNEP.
