OVERVIEW OF THE FUNCTIONS OF THE POST

The position of Associate Editor (English) is placed under the authority of the Director of the Division for Communications and Public Engagement (CPE), and the direct supervision of the Editor-in-Chief of the UNESCO Courier magazine.

The mission of the Associate Editor (English) will be to participate in the elaboration of the content published in the UNESCO Courier, to ensure the quality of the English edition of the magazine and to play an active role in its promotion, especially on social networks. It is key for the editorial contribution to the magazine, as well as for its promotion.

Within this context, the incumbent's main tasks will be to:

I. Take part in the editorial work of the Courier:

Explore English-speaking sources to suggest ideas of articles to be published in the magazine in accordance with the editorial line. Write and edit texts and interviews. Identify external contributors and commission articles. Proofread and edit articles. Ensure accuracy and quality of the texts. Help develop Courier podcasts.

II. Contribute to promoting the magazine:

Take part in social media campaigns and craft messages to be posted on the Courier accounts. Post articles on the Courier website. Help design and disseminate promotional materials (podcasts, videos…).

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Education

Advanced university degree (Master's or equivalent) in the field of communication or journalism.

Work Experience

A minimum of two (2) years of relevant professional experience in the field of communication or journalism, of which at least one (1) year acquired at international level. Experience in writing and proofreading texts, such as articles and interviews. Experience in developing podcasts.

Skills & Competencies

Excellent writing skills. Ability to meet tight deadlines, with attention to detail and quality of work. Communication skills. Excellent coordination and anticipation skills. Capacity to identify stories in line with the editorial policy of the magazine. Strong knowledge of international media. Sense of initiative. Team spirit. Ability to work in a multicultural environment. Very good knowledge and practice of social networks. Very good IT skills, including knowledge of MS software (Word, Excel, etc.).

Languages

Excellent knowledge (written and spoken) of English and French.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS

Education

Advanced university degree (Master's or equivalent) in new technologies.

Work Experience

Experience in working with the United Nations or a comparable international organization. Experience in image management.

Skills & Competencies

Knowledge of image management systems and software (photo and video). Knowledge of CMS, such as Drupal. Sensitivity to aesthetics.

Languages

Knowledge of another official language of UNESCO (Arabic, Chinese, Russian and/or Spanish).
