The International Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes (ICSID) was established in1966. It is one of the five organizations that make up the WBG and is the global leader in international investment dispute settlement. To date, 158 countries are ICSID members.

The mandate of the International Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes (ICSID) is to foster increased flows of international investment by providing an impartial and effective international forum for the resolution of disputes between host governments and foreign investors.

Role & Responsibilities:

Institutional Matters

The Associate Counsel, in collaboration with other members of the ICSID Institutional Team, will undertake a wide array of operational and corporate responsibilities with the utmost professionalism, diplomacy, and discretion.ย  Key duties and accountabilities include:

โ€ข Assist in the day-to-day operational work of the Institutional Team.
โ€ข Conduct legal research on investment law and investor-State dispute settlement.
โ€ข Assist ICSID management with the development and implementation of institutional policies and procedures related to ICSID Convention membership, including maintenance of the Panels of Conciliators and of Arbitrators and updates of ICSID official documents.
โ€ข Assist with ongoing institutional projects.
โ€ข Support outreach efforts to member governments and other ICSID stakeholders, including preparation of materials for meetings, conferences, speeches, training courses, technical assistance and seminars.
โ€ข Draft internal memoranda concerning membership and other institutional matters.
โ€ข Prepare minutes of meetings and follow-up on actionable items as needed.
โ€ข Assist with the preparation of the Centreโ€™s publications and official documents, including the ICSIDโ€™s Annual Report
โ€ข Serve as a member of the Editorial Team for the ICSID Reviewโ€”Foreign Investment Law Journal.
โ€ข Draft and translate institutional correspondence and announcements in English, and in Spanish and/or French.ย 
โ€ข Assist in the drafting of internal and external inquiries responses to requests for information, ensuring quality control and timely management.
โ€ข Assist in the maintenance of the institutional affairs records and filing system.
โ€ข Undertake other ad hoc assignments and projects as required.

Case Management

The Associate Counsel will also assist ICSID counsel with the administration of ICSID proceedings. Duties in this regard include:

โ€ข Analyze requests for mediation, conciliation and arbitration, and applications for post-award remedies.
โ€ข Assist with the constitution of conciliation commissions, arbitral tribunals and ad hoc Committees.
โ€ข Draft, format, proofread, and finalize case-related correspondence in English, and Spanish and/or French.
โ€ข Transmit correspondence to the Tribunal and the Parties.
โ€ข Prepare initial drafts of documents, letters and working papers.
โ€ข Conduct research, analyze information, and summarize findings.
โ€ข Provide editing assistance with awards and decisions.
โ€ข Assist with the logistical arrangements for remote and in-person hearings in Washington, D.C. and abroad.ย 
โ€ข Track and maintain case procedural details and milestones up to date in ICSIDโ€™s case tracking systems and external website.

Selection Criteria

โ€ข Law degree (JD, LLB, LLM, or equivalent) and at least three years of relevant experience.
โ€ข Knowledge of international investment law and public international law.
โ€ข Knowledge of arbitration practice and procedure.
โ€ข Excellent English language skills.ย  Fluency in Spanish and/or French, the other two official languages of ICSID, would be an advantage.
โ€ข Excellent drafting skills. Ability to research arbitration and investment law questions and draft documents clearly and precisely with limited supervision.
โ€ข Demonstrated ability to nurture and maintain relationships with internal and external stakeholders.ย 
โ€ข Ability to think strategically and rapidly analyze diverse information from varied sources.ย 
โ€ข Ability to take initiative, personal ownership, and accountability to meet deadlines, work under pressure, balance competing demands, and achieve agreed-upon results.ย ย
